Alzheimer’s - coping skills for caregivers

One of my specialties is counseling families who are navigating care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. Being a caregiver for someone with Alzheimer's can be devastating. It's a gradual erasure of memories for the patient and a constant reminder of a life of memories lost for the caregiver. Coping with Alzheimer's is easier if you know how to navigate the stormy seas of this disease. Talking to someone who has been there, and adjusting course along the way, has been short of miraculous for me and our family.

It started for me by reading the 36 Hour Day. It was an eye-opening experience and insightfully rich with stories that reflected much of what I was going through. It was like I was looking through the eyes of the writer. There have been so many incidents that ruined my day and relationship with my mother when my father was not aware of what was happening to her, or why she was changing so fast. My clients have had the same experiences that have caused so much pain and arguments within their families. The tips I received from research, reading, meetings with colleagues, and talking to others have all been invaluable in assisting my family’s walk through this painful process. With what I've learned, I can help you to find peace in the storm and even help you put events and conversations into perspective.
